A Guide to Buying Garden Vacs and Leaf Blowers

We’ve got some great advice when it comes to choosing the best garden vacuum or leaf blower.

We have a superb range of garden vacs and leaf blowers for sale, so we’re confident you’ll find what will suit you and your garden best.

What are Garden Vacuums and Leaf Blowers Used For?

Garden vacuums and leaf blowers can help with the sometimes monstrous task of clearing fallen leaves and light garden debris. Many models will combine blow and vacuum functions. Most vacuum models will also shred fallen leaves and small twigs ready for composting. Clearing leaves is important because they can block light and harbour disease, affecting the health of your lawn.

Leaf blowers and vacuums are not designed to pick up stones or twigs as they can damage the machine. If you need to pick up leaves from pebble driveways or soil, then blow them onto a grass area first before you vacuum them up.

Before You Buy

To ensure that you make the right choice when it comes to buying garden vacs and leaf blowers, ask yourself:

• What are you clearing?
• How big is your garden?
• How much power and noise can you handle?
• How much weight can you bear?
• Do you want a leaf blower or a leaf vacuum, or both?

Garden Vacuums and Leaf Blowers and Your Garden Size

Which Garden Vacuums and Leaf Blowers are Good for Small Gardens?
If you have a small garden, a lightweight handheld electric or cordless blower and vacuum will suit you well. Consider the length of the cable of any electric leaf blower before purchasing, as your work area will need to be within reaching distance of an electric source. Alternatively, opt for a cordless model. Popular choices are the Handy THEV3000 Electric Leaf Blower Vacuum, the Webb EBV2800 Electric Garden Vac or the Greenworks GMAX 40V Cordless Blower Vac.

Which Leaf Blowers are Good for Larger Gardens?
If you have a larger garden or area to maintain, then a petrol leaf blower may be the right choice for you, as they can provide more power than their electric handheld counterparts. Popular choices include the McCulloch GB322VX Petrol Leaf Blower Vacuum, the Webb BV26 26cc Petrol Blow Vac and the Sherpa Petrol Leaf Blower Vacuum.

Backpack models put the bulk of the weight onto your back with wide padded shoulder straps. This makes it easier to carry the larger, more powerful blowers set up in this way, such as the Cobra Petrol Backpack Blower BP43C or the powerful cordless EGO Power+ Backpack Blower.

Which Garden Vacuums and Leaf Blowers are Good for Big Gardens or Areas?
For larger areas still, you can benefit from wheeled or push leaf blowers and vacuums. Push or wheeled leaf vacs and blowers will make light work of large areas and include huge collection bags (as much as 90 gallons). From the Handy Push Lawn Sweeper THPLS (unpowered) to the powerful and popular Billy Goat range, we have a machine to suit every budget.

If you have a ride-on mower or tractor, a towable lawn sweeper is a consideration. Just hook the sweeper onto the back of your ride-on and away you go. These are good for clearing dry leaves and small lawn debris but don’t expect to be able to sweep up all your fine grass cuttings.

What are the Different Types of Garden Vacuums and Leaf Blowers?

The different types of garden vacuums and leaf blowers are:

  • Handheld electric leaf blowers
  • Cordless leaf blowers
  • Handheld petrol leaf blowers
  • 2-in-1 garden vacuums and leaf blowers
  • Backpack leaf blowers
  • Wheeled Petrol Leaf Vacuums
  • Lawn sweepers

Handheld Electric Leaf Blowers
Leaf blowers in their simplest form are electric handheld models which clear areas using a strong jet of air. Leaves can be blown into piles from where they can be transferred to compost bins or disposed of.

Cordless Leaf Blowers
Modern cordless blowers make use of the new, innovative lithium-ion battery technology. They are as powerful as many petrol machines but are cleaner, lighter, quieter and easier to start. Batteries can be recharged in as little as 30 minutes* and have a run time of up to two hours. Popular models include the Greenworks 40V G-Max Axial Blower and the EGO Power Plus 56V Blower with a 2.5Ah battery. If you invest in one of these cordless blowers, there is the added advantage that the battery and charger can be used with other cordless tools in the same range.

Handheld Petrol Leaf blowers
Handheld petrol leaf blowers can produce an impressive airflow upwards of 350 cubic feet per minute. However, this pales in comparison to walk-behind/push leaf blowers weighing in with a whopping 1800cfm. The latter is capable of clearing golf courses!

2-in-1 Garden Vacuums and Blowers
You’ll most likely want a leaf blow-vac. These allow you to blow debris into piles then suck into an attached container which compacts and shreds the leaves in the process. This leaves you with a fine waste material perfect for composting as it rots down much faster due to the larger surface area for bacteria and air to work on. The most convenient blower-vacs are those that can alternate between settings at a flick of a switch, such as the Webb EBV2800 Electric Garden Vac, although they are not always the most powerful. These models possess an elephant trunk nozzle which can prove cumbersome but the lightweight design aids manoeuvrability. Other more powerful models, such as the McCulloch GB322VX, are supplied with two sets of quickly interchangeable pipes that can be fitted, without tools, to easily change between blow and vac modes.

Backpack Blowers
Backpack blowers are mostly petrol-driven but we have a few in our cordless range as well. Backpack blowers are ideal for clearing large areas of leaves and other lawn debris. The powerful engine is mounted on your back, making it easier and more comfortable to carry for long periods of time. Our popular choices include the WEBB BPB33 Leaf Blower and the EGO Power Plus Leaf Blower EGLB6000E.

Wheeled Petrol Leaf Vacuums
If you have a very large area to clear, a wheeled petrol vacuum is the answer. Our most popular range is the Billy Goat. Choose a Quiet-Vac Billy Goat if you want to clear debris from hard surfaces, a Multi-Vac Billy Goat if you need to clear hard and grass areas and a KV Lawn Vac Billy Goat if you want to clear debris from grass. Find out more about our range of Billy Goats.

Lawn Sweepers
Lawn sweepers can be pushed or towed. As the wheels of the sweeper turn, they drive large brushes which sweep debris into the collector. The faster the sweeper goes, the faster the brush rotates. Sweepers are excellent at clearing large areas quickly but don’t expect them to pick up fine grass clippings.

Now you know what you need, browse our superb range of garden vacs and leaf blowers - we’re confident you’ll find the perfect blower vac for you and your garden.
