I purchased the McCulloch 742 to use in my large garden. It dealt easily and effectively with 12" / 300mm diameter tree trunks (and would deal with larger if required). Check the chain tension regularly when first using as the instruction booklet warns that the chain will stretch - and it did. Keep an eye on the chain oil level as is does consume it faster than the fuel, so you are likely to run out of chain oil (which will damage the chain if you continue to cut without chain oil) before the chainsaw requires refuelling. I have used this chainsaw on and off for a week and it still cuts as new. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 rating from me is that it can be a temperamental to start. All in all this chainsaw has done all it has been asked to do around the garden. If you are looking for a good diy chainsaw at a reasonable price the McCulloch 742 is worth considering. Make sure you read the instructions and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment as recommended if you want to minimise the risk of personal injury.

First class service and a first class product also the cheapest on the net (Believe me I searched!) Now have all my winter fuel sorted. This saw just seems to have that little extra power smaller ones lack. Thanks.

Early days as yet but the saw works really well and cut through a telegraph pole with very little effort. would recommend that early checks are made on the chain as it becomes quite loose in the first few minutes of use, otherwise all seems to be of a high standard .

After careful thought I purchased the 7 42 and because of the bar length. It has done exactly what I wanted it to do. Performs well, easy to start hot or cold and the best price i could find. Thank you.

I purchased the McCulloch 7 42 chainsaw as I had three tree trunks on the ground and an obsolete failed McCulloch chainsaw in my hands and a wife looking to see the lawn again. Having read the reviews on this saw and its brother all noting very early chain stretch I ensured that the new chain was well lubicated before I filled it with oil and fuel. It has now run for some 8 hours and there is no measureable chain stretch and the chainsaw has done everything asked of it. Easy starts and quick cuts through 8 inch diameter wood. So far it has proven to be well worth its cost and the preliminary indications are that its quality is at least as good as the old saw which lasted for 20 years of abuse.
