If an electric shredder simply won’t do, Gardenlines offer a range of petrol-driven shredders and chippers to make light work of even the biggest job.
Top-of-the-range models are powered by 10hp engines and weigh over 100kgs. These tough, fast, versatile machines mean business. Sitting on semi-pneumatic tyres for easy manoeuvrability, many models come with large collector bags to hold the huge amount of chippings these machines produce. Many petrol shredders possess double the chipper capacity of electric models; shredding branches as much as 70mm in diameter.
Petrol shredders use various cutting systems, one being the flailing-blades method. As many as twelve staggered metal flails are supported on high steel rods. This self-feeding cutting style is incredibly efficient, as wood is cut in the same direction as the fibres. Because these machines need less power, fuel consumption, noise levels and vibrations are all reduced.
And as the knife drum goes through a continuous cycle, the wood is successively split and cut until small enough to fall through a sieve, making for better composting material.
The dual-knife method is also self-feeding as rotating knives, placed at pitched angles, pull and cut branches in the same process. As the knives are reversible, their life expectancy is doubled.
The third style is similar to that incorporated in impact shredders, as a sharp rotating blade slices the material.
Petrol shredders are the heavy duty answer to disposing large amounts of brush, branches and cuttings. Extra features include feed rollers and vacuum nozzles, but whatever shredder you buy, safety is paramount. Wear gloves and eye protection and consider ear defenders when using the most powerful models.
